DRS members operate GB2IWM on various days of the week, subject to their availability.
Frequency bands and direction of transmission varies with each volunteer, and the time of day/conditions
Operators and schedules do change from time to time.  This list is as up-to-date as practicable, and does rely on the Operators to advise the DRS Management Committee of any changes to their availability and their personal details.

Peter is flexible in his approach to HF operating, and the frequency band in use depends on the time of day and conditions.  Usually he will try 40m and 20m for DX if those bands are active, and 80m/40m for locals in the UK.

Peter (left) is an ex R.A.F. signals operator, who trained at R.A.F. Compton Bassett in 1951/52 and served first on Air-Sea Rescue Launches and then on various postings  in the Middle East and UK on ground radio station duties.  Like his Father before him, he teaches Morse code and is also an Examiner for Morse code tests.

Jan and John operate most Sundays throughout the year, with Jan operating and John logging the contacts made.  They operate mostly on 40M and 80M using the G5RV or on 20M using the rotary log-periodic

Jan and John are happy to spend time working QRP station as well as making friends with contacts both locally and worldwide.

David sometimes operates on a Sunday morning before Jan and John arrive.

Mondays - G3JPM, Brian OR G8IDL David

 Brian operates the station on Mondays, roughly once a month.

The frequency bands in use will depend on conditions at the time, but he prefers 20m for dx, and 80m for inter-UK working.

Brian is an ex RAF ground wireless operator who trained at RAF Compton Bassett in the early 1950s.  He has been licensed for 50 years in January 2004.

David G8IDL is ex-Royal Signals, Diplomatic Wireless Service, and Pye Telecom Radio Systems Department.

Direction of transmission tends to be towards the Pacific between 0800 - 1100 and towards Europe between 1100 - 1600.

David’s interest in radio began with making his first crystal set in the 1950’s, and visiting the radio shack of a ‘ham’.   Becoming a radio amateur was an ambition, finally realised in 1993.

 He was an ATC chaplain for 30yrs and latterly also radio instructor with 2230 (Sittingbourne)  Sqdn. – hence his interest in aircraft and the RAF.  

 His main interest in radio is HF operating.  Does some CW (straight key) – member of Fists Club.  Member of G QRP club and enjoys a bit of home brew.  Own rig is a Kenwood TS480HX with a Hustler 6BTV ground mounted vertical.

 David retired to Duxford in 2005 after living most of his life in Kent.  His other interests include Astronomy.

Patrick was a Merchant Navy Radio Officer from 1957-1961. After this he became a Service and Installation Engineer for Robophone (telephone answering machines), then a Technical Engineer in IBC Sound Recording Studios.  Later he ordained as Priest in Church of England.


He has worked in local radio as Producer/Presenter for over 25 years and contributed to programmes for Radio 2, Radio 4 and Anglia Television. He also produces programmes for Premier Christian Radio.

Direction of transmission tends to be towards the USA.

Max is ex-British Army, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and ex-Pye Telecommunications and Philips Telecom.  At Pye/Philips, Max was initially a draughtsman and worked on the drawings for the Pye C12, and later was a Graphics Co-ordinator in the Publicity Department.

Max also operates on Saturdays.

Colin G8RQB passed the Radio Amateurs Exam in 1959 but did not take out his licence until 1973.  He was
educated in Germany 1946 - 1956  in British Forces Educational Schools ( Hamburg & Wilhelmshaven ).
Colin's father was serving in Germany during this period. As the result of living in Germany for this
extended period Colin is bilingual & enjoys QSO's in the German language.

Colin is married to Sally (1964) - they live in Royston some 7 miles South of Duxford, he has two daughters & 4
grandchildren. Radio has been in his blood since he was 10 years old, starting with building crystal sets &
progressing through to Amateur Radio. He was employed in the Electro-dynamic Vibration Testing business for
most of his working life & worked for Ling Electronics, a company which in the early days, was known as Pye Ling.

When operating at Duxford, despite the current poor conditions, he normally works on 20 Mtrs - he also keeps an
open ear on 17 Mtrs just in case!

Martyn G6FSU is an ex-BOAC/British Airways airline pilot with 32 years experience of flying VC10 and 747 aircraft.  After his mandatory retirement from BA in 2001 he flew 737 aircraft for Easyjet for 3 years before finally hanging up his flying helmet.  He now teaches part-time in a local flight simulator and enjoys the local Raynet Group, electronics and computers (particularly putting things back together afterwards, which is worrying!)

Martyn is flexible in which days he operates and is also available for special event days at Duxford.

 David, M0XDS retired from full time employment as an electronics design engineer in December 2003 having spent most of his career with STC, initially on HF equipment and more recently on mobile phone equipment, both analogue and digital.

He is a civilian instructor with the Air Cadets at 1374 Squadron East Barnet, teaching radio communications using military procedures, and also amateur foundation licence courses for the cadets. He is active on HF at home using a Yaesu FT840.
