Receiver
R1155A (1940)
Receiver type R1155 was designed primarily for use
in aircraft,
in conjunction with transmitters of the T1154 class, and was a key
component
of the HF radio installation for all Royal Air Force bombers during
most
of the Second World War. The equipment was also installed in RAF
Air-Sea
Rescue Launches, used in ground stations and in some radio
vehicles.
The original or "parent type" of the receiver is the R1155, and later
variants
were models R1l55A, B, C, D, E, F, L, M, and N.
The receiver covered the frequency band 75kHz to 18.5 MHz in five
ranges.
Both modulated and un-modulated signals could be received on all ranges
and provision was made to operate with a D/F loop aerial on ranges 2,
3,
and 4. The Wireless Operator could take direction-finding
bearings
by either visual or aural means.
For reception of communications signals, the receiver could be operated
with either fixed or trailing aerials; a fixed aerial was normally used
for
the HF ranges, and the trailing aerial for airborne installations on
the MF
ranges. The D/F loop aerial, such as a Type 3 or 4, was the standard
fit for
the direction finding facility.
In airborne installations, a rotary transformer power unit driven from
the aircraft electrical system provided the power supply for the
receiver.
This power unit also provided the LT supply for the associated
transmitter
T1154. For ground installations, a separate power unit Type 114
was
used which operated directly from 230 Volt 50 c/s AC mains.
After initially creating a number of variant models for different
applications,
by August 1944 the number of variants in production was reduced to 4
types.
The type R1155A was used for Halifax bomber aircraft, the R1155F for
all
bomber aircraft other than the Halifax and for other types of aircraft
that
required aluminium cased versions (to lessen interference with the
magnetic
compass). The type R1155L was used for general-purpose use
(aluminium
cased version of the R 1155N), and the R1155N for all other general use
except
in bomber aircraft. |
This individual R1155A
unit, Ref. No. 10D/82C
, serial no. 18129 is in completely original condition, and is fitted
with
all of the various approved modifications given to the equipment series
during
its service life-time.
From the EKC inspection stamps which are visible, it is deduced that
this
unit was manufactured by the sub-contractor E.K.Cole at the
Southend-on-Sea
factory, before production was moved to other locations.

This set was donated to
DRS, and is unusual in
that no un-authorised modifications have been made and all of the
original
circuit elements are intact.
Due to the excellent condition of this equipment, conservation work
has been limited to general cleaning,
light re-touching of the paint and retuning.
The equipment is currently in full working
condition.
